Planes allow us to travel distances in a day that would have been virtually impossible by any other means of travel. Commercial flights can be a gateway to a tropical vacation, a business trip, and everything else in between. There is an inherent risk, however, with traveling at high speeds thirty thousand feet in the air. While flight is statistically one of the safest modes of travel available, it is not without its risks. It has been reported by the The National Transportation Safety Board that there were 1,649 civilian aviation accidents that resulted in 564 deaths last year. A large portion of these accidents were the result of small, private aircraft that might have a more difficult time handling high winds, turbulence, storms, or lightning.

Tragically, it seems as if 2015 will continue in line with these statistics as a small personal plane recently crashed in a Texas field, resulting in one death. A single-engine Piper PA-46 was approaching Preston Smith International Airport when it crashed at around 7:30 p.m. on February, 4th. As it was falling from the sky, the plane hit the KCBD radio station’s transmitter tower. The plane did significant damage to the building and tower, but fortunately no one from KCBD was injured. The plane then crashed into a nearby field. The building is still not safe to enter, and the crash is still being investigated by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board.
