Incidents involving MBTA passengers spitting on bus drivers and other MBTA employees are on the rise this year, according to MBTA officials. So far this year, there have been 29 total assaults on MBTA drivers, compared with 22 by this time last year. The spitting incidents are especially disconcerting because some diseases can be spread through saliva. Hence, MBTA Transit Police are collecting saliva samples following the spitting incidents in the hopes of matching up the DNA with someone on existing DNA databases. Already, a warrant has been issued for the arrest of 21 year-old Rafael Guzman, who faces charges of assault and battery, and assault with a dangerous weapon. Guzman allegedly spat on an MBTA bus driver.
