Five Al Qaeda defendants who were detained in connection with the September 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York were recently arraigned in federal court in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. According to local authorities, it was the first time that the defendants were seen in public since 2008. The defendants had been kept overseas by the CIA for years following the 9/11 attacks, where they were subjected to harsh interrogation techniques.
Their arraignment had been delayed because the Obama administration had tried to transfer their cases to a federal court in lower Manhattan, near the scene of the attacks. However, these efforts to move the case proved to be futile after New York City officials, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg included, demanded that the trial be held elsewhere. All five defendants deferred entering a plea, and the trial is not expected to begin for at least another year.
