A Fridley, Minnesota mother and her boyfriend were arrested recently for shaving the head of the woman’s 12 year–old daughter, and then forcing her to wear a diaper and run back and forth outside the house as a punishment for not doing well at school. The two adults laughed as police hauled them off to jail, not understanding why they had been arrested. The police were alerted to the incident when a neighbor called them after the girl had been running around for about 30 minutes, according to the police. The two will likely be charged with malicious punishment of a child, a gross misdemeanor under Minnesota law. The woman’s children were put into foster care.

Incidents involving MBTA passengers spitting on bus drivers and other MBTA employees are on the rise this year, according to MBTA officials. Five Al Qaeda defendants who were detained in connection with the September 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York were recently arraigned in federal court in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. According to local authorities, it was the first time that the defendants were seen in public since 2008. The defendants had been kept overseas by the CIA for years following the 9/11 attacks, where they were subjected to harsh interrogation techniques.

Their arraignment had been delayed because the Obama administration had tried to transfer their cases to a federal court in lower Manhattan, near the scene of the attacks.
