Elisabeth Hagen Resigns As Under Secretary For Food Safety.

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Under-Secretary Elisabeth Hagen, M.D., has announced that she is leaving her position at the governmental agency for an opportunity to work in the private sector.

Dr. Hagen has held her position as UnderSecretary since August 2010 and has overseen the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). Her job as Under-Secretary has required her to oversee the regulation and testing of the country’s meat, poultry, and egg supply. She is also on President Barack Obama’s Food Safety Working Group.

Dr. Hagen released a statement in which she thanked the members of her team and commended them for their success over the past three years in implementing better mechanisms for monitoring the industry, modernizing the USDA and FSIS, and improving connections with consumers.

The USDA Secretary, Tom Vilsack, thanked Dr. Hagen for her leadership in protecting Americans from foodborne illness. Vilsack recognized her involvement in classifying six additional strains of E. coli as adulterants in meat, as well as her involvement in strengthening the protective provisions already in place.

In addition, Dr. Hagen was very active in educating consumers about food safety. She helped develop an information system that provides consumers with information about safely handling different types of food.
