Low-Price Massachusetts Bus Companies Apply for New Licenses After Addressing Safety Concerns.

Two popular low-price bus companies, Fung Wah and Lucky Star, hope to begin once again carrying passengers between New York and Boston as early as this fall, company officials have reported.

The Boston-based companies were known for their cheap prices before being taken off the road by federal and state authorities earlier this year. This was after safety officials found major problems with the companies’ motor vehicles, and safety violations by their employees, all of which endangered passengers on the buses.  Since then, the two companies say they have purchases new buses, hired safety consultants, and retrained their employees and drivers.

The companies have also applied to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which regulates interstate bus travel, to resume their operations.

Although the companies hope to continue attracting customers with low prices, they say they may not be able to operate as cheaply as they did in the past.

Six Killed, Dozens Injured in Canadian Bus-Train Collision.

Canadian authorities are investigating a horrific accident that occurred when a passenger bus struck a commuter train during the morning rush hour in Ottawa, Ontario on Wednesday, September 18, 2013.

Passengers on board the bus claim they yelled for the driver to stop the bus, as they approached the crossing barrier at the intersection of the railroad and the train tracks. But the driver drove the bus through the barrier and into the train despite their pleas. The impact ripped away the front part of the bus, and derailed the train’s locomotive and one of its passenger cars.

Six people were killed, including the driver of the bus, and 34 more bus passengers were injured.  Witnesses described the horrible scene, stating that bodies and limbs were strewn about the accident area.  No serious personal injuries were reported among the passengers on the train.

Passengers were not sure what caused the driver to drive through the barrier and onto the train tracks, but stated that the driver appeared to be in good condition at the previous stop.

Authorities stated that the layout of the crossing, which has a 90-degree bend, could have been a contributing factor to the tragic bus accident. They further said that they would not be able to reach a conclusion on the cause of the wrongful death accident until they had reviewed the data located in the bus’s black box, which contains data on the bus’s speed and braking.

Prosecutors Seek Death Penalty in Revolting Rape and Murder Case in India.

A gang rape and murder of a 23 year-old university student on a bus in India in December 2012 has set off an international firestorm over the state of women’s rights and public safety in the world’s second most populous country. Now, the prosecutors of the four perpetrators are seeking the death penalty for the sexual assault and murder.

In the December 2012 sexual assault, four young men accosted the victim and her friend on a public bus and began to strike the victim and her friend with a metallic bar. The four men proceeded to rape and beat the victim as the bus rode its route. The attackers then dumped the victim’s body, naked and bloodied, on the side of a road. The victim was taken to a hospital where the doctors tried to save her life. After a few days, however, the victim passed away from the personal injuries sustained in the sexual assault.

The case set off a firestorm inside India and across the world. Since December 2012, hundreds of mass marches and demonstrations have been held in India – protesting the condition of women in Indian society. The case and its aftermath have already achieved a certain measure of change. Every case of sexual assault in India is now receiving widespread media coverage, which keeps the public apprised of the frequency and brutality of these incidents. The Indian government has passed into law new crimes for voyeurism and stalking, as well as harsher punishments for sexual assault, and even new “fast-track” courts for rape cases.

On Tuesday, September 10, 2013, Judge Yogesh Khanna found the four defendants – Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Akshay Kumar Singh – guilty of murder, rape and kidnapping. Judge Khanna also found that the actions of the four defendants were premeditated and performed with “coldblooded” and brutal calculation.

At a Wednesday, September 11 hearing, the prosecution and the defense made their respective cases with regard to sentencing. The prosecutors asked for the death penalty for all four defendants. The Indian Supreme Court has previously held that the death penalty can only be imposed in the most exceptional cases, in which the crime is committed in “an extremely brutal, grotesque, diabolical, revolting or dastardly manner so as to arouse intense and extreme indignation of the community.” The prosecutors are arguing that the crime fits within this definition. The defense lawyers for the four defendants are arguing that life imprisonment is the appropriate sentence in this case. The defense lawyers have also announced that they will appeal the judge’s determination of the defendants’ guilt.

Judge Khanna is scheduled to deliver the sentence on Friday, September 13.
