Chang Joon Hwang, 53, of Easthampton, MA, is in critical condition at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA after he crashed his van into a utility pole at 2:29 AM on Monday, February 24.
According to authorities, Hwang was driving southwest on East Street just before the accident occurred. The accident occurred at 89 East St., and Hwang’s residence is listed at 211 East St.
While investigators are unsure what caused the accident, they stated that it appears Hwang veered off the right side of the road, through a snow bank, and into a utility pole. Hwang’s van struck the utility pole near the driver’s side door, and Hwang suffered life threatening injuries. Emergency responders airlifted Hwang to Hartford Hospital in critical condition before he was transferred to Baystate Medical Center. His current condition is unknown.
Investigators are continuing to investigate the accident, reconstructing the crash to attempt to determine what caused Hwang’s van to veer off the road.
The utility pole was severely damaged in the crash, and it may have to be replaced by Western Massachusetts Electric Co.
