Last April, burglars stole a safe that contained a very valuable hard drive. This hard drive stored the personal information of 1.2 million people, including students, faculty, city employers, and many others. The data included financial records, social security numbers, and health records. People were notified by mail if their personal data was compromised, and they understandably became extremely upset when they found out that their information was being kept in a small safe in a storage facility. The suit targets Washington State University for negligently handling extremely valuable information, particularly for failing to even install one security camera at the site of the burglary. The arm of the university most believe is responsible for the breach is the Social and Economic Sciences Research Center, which has since apologized.
