HVAC Technician Develops Seizure Disorder After Shock.

A 27 year-old HVAC technician was servicing a refrigeration system at a Massachusetts Veteran’s Administration building when his hand came into contact with wires coming out of an uncovered junction box.  The technician was shocked and diagnosed with an electrical accident injury.  He returned to work six weeks later, but continued to suffer from fatigue.  Approximately nine months later, the technician was found unconscious and unresponsive.  After many tests, physicians diagnosed the technician with a seizure disorder.  The doctors attributed the disorder to the technician’s electrocution and previous head injuries.  After his diagnosis, the technician could no longer drive a car or return to any kind of gainful employment.  A judge awarded the technician 1.93 million dollars but reduced the award by 50% for the plaintiff’s own negligence.

Eight-Year Employment Suit Hinged On Issue Of Detriment.

A Massachusetts construction manager initiated a lawsuit against his employer after he was fired in 2004.  The construction manager, Henry Suominen Jr., alleged in his lawsuit that his employer had broken an agreement to provide him with certain compensation in addition to his regular salary.  A jury originally found that Suominen relied on the promises made by his employer and awarded him 1.7 million dollars in damages.  Suominen’s employers appealed this decision and argued that Suominen had to prove that he suffered some detriment as a result of relying on his employer’s promises. The appeals court agreed and sent the case back for a retrial in which a second jury found that Suominen had not relied on any promise of his employer to his detriment.

Man Responsible For Unveiling Madoff Scheme Continues To Uncover Fraud.

Boston Personal Injury LawyerFifty five year-old Harry Markopolos, a man who criticized the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for disregarding his tips on Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi Scheme many years before it was discovered, is still involved in dealing with the aftermath of the Madoff case. According to reports, Markopolos pursued evidence of Madoff’s scheme from 2000 until 2008, when news of the scandal was first revealed to the world. Since that time, Markopolos has testified before Congress and traveled throughout the country for various speaking engagements.

Markopolos first told the SEC’s Boston office about his information involving the Madoff scheme in 2000, but he was largely ignored. The Madoff scandal involved $65 billion that was taken from a number of major U.S. business people, philanthropists, Americans saving for retirement and wealthy European families. A movie was made about the scandal, but it did not bring in a lot of viewers at the box office.

Currently, Markopolos is working on a case involving the State Street Corp. of Boston and Bank of New York Mellon Corp. Markopolos alleges that the banks overcharged pensions and other big clients for currency trades for a number of years. Both of the banks have denied the allegations so far.
