Elisabeth Hagen Resigns As Under Secretary For Food Safety.

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Under-Secretary Elisabeth Hagen, M.D., has announced that she is leaving her position at the governmental agency for an opportunity to work in the private sector.

Dr. Hagen has held her position as UnderSecretary since August 2010 and has overseen the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). Her job as Under-Secretary has required her to oversee the regulation and testing of the country’s meat, poultry, and egg supply. She is also on President Barack Obama’s Food Safety Working Group.

Dr. Hagen released a statement in which she thanked the members of her team and commended them for their success over the past three years in implementing better mechanisms for monitoring the industry, modernizing the USDA and FSIS, and improving connections with consumers.

The USDA Secretary, Tom Vilsack, thanked Dr. Hagen for her leadership in protecting Americans from foodborne illness. Vilsack recognized her involvement in classifying six additional strains of E. coli as adulterants in meat, as well as her involvement in strengthening the protective provisions already in place.

In addition, Dr. Hagen was very active in educating consumers about food safety. She helped develop an information system that provides consumers with information about safely handling different types of food.

Jean-Claude Van Damme Blows Minds In New Volvo Commercial.

Action star Jean-Claude Van Damme, best known for his leading roles in Universal Soldier, Bloodsport and Kickboxer, has stunned the world in a new commercial for Volvo trucks.

The commercial begins with a pan of 53 year-old Van Damme’s bust, as Van Damme says in a voiceover, “I’ve had my ups and downs. My fair share of bumpy roads and heavy winds. That’s what made me what I am today. Now I stand here before you. What you see is a body crafted to perfection.” As the camera zooms out, Van Damme is seen standing with each foot on the cabin of a Volvo truck. The tractor-trailer trucks begin to reverse along a highway slowly moving away from each other. As the distance between the trucks widens, Van Damme stretches into an incredible full split above the road.

According to a senior Volvo engineer, Jan-Inge Svensson, the purpose of the commercial is to demonstrate the precision and stability of the new Volvo trucks’ steering system. According to Svensson, such a stunt could only be possible without a serious risk of injury to Van Damme, because the “stability and control [of the steering] are so good that you can reverse a truck over a long distance with very high precision.”

Top Massachusetts US Attorney to Make Decision on Recommendation to Seek the Death Penalty in Boston Marathon Bombing Case.

United States Attorney, Carmen Ortiz, of the Boston, Massachusetts US Attorney’s Office announced on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 that she will make her recommendation to US Attorney General Eric Holder with regard to whether Dzhokar Tsarnaev should face the death penalty for his alleged role in the Boston Marathon bombing.

In a status conference held on Tuesday morning in the federal district court in Boston, Judge George O’Toole asked the government attorneys whether they will be seeking the death penalty against Dzhokar Tsarnaev. That issue arises in the criminal case against the Chechen immigrant for his alleged role in the Boston bombing. Tsarnaev is alleged to have assisted his brother, Tamerlan, in making pressure cooker bombs and setting them off near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013. The bombs killed three people and caused injuries to some 260 others.

The federal government is pursuing federal terrorism charges against Tsarnaev for his alleged role in the bombing. At the option of the government, the death penalty can be sought on these charges.

US Attorney Carmen Ortiz announced today that by the end of this week, she will make her recommendation to Attorney General Eric Holder. Holder will ultimately make the decision on whether the government will pursue the death penalty against Tsarnaev. At any rate, Judge O’Toole indicated that he expects the final decision from the government on the subject no later than January 31, 2014.
