Hundreds Mourn Family of Seven Killed in Bronx, NY Car Accident.

Boston Personal Injury LawyerMaria Nuñez Gonzales was driving her family home for a family dinner in her Honda Pilot on the Bronx River Parkway in New York—like she does every day. On this occasion, however, her vehicle struck a median barrier and plunged sixty feet off of an overpass and into a nonpublic area of the Bronx Zoo.

Passengers included her 10 year-old daughter, Jazlyn; her sister, Maria Nuñez Rosario, 39; her sister’s daughters Marlyn and Naily, ages 3 and 7; her 81 year-old mother, Ana Julia Martinez; and her 85 year-old father, Jacobo Nuñez.  All seven passengers in the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene of the car accident.

The grandparents had been visiting from the Dominican Republic to attend Jazlyn’s first communion that was scheduled for the week following the auto crash.

The car accident is still under investigation, but local police believe that Ms. Gonzalez lost control of her car while speeding on an elevated section of the highway. She then hit the median and flew over the guardrail.  It is estimated that she was going 68.5 miles per hour in a 50 miles per hour zone.

The area of the highway had previously been criticized as being unsafe, and state transportation officials began installing new concrete barriers this week to supplement the four-foot-tall guardrails.

California Cyclist Struck and Killed by Car.

An 85 year-old unidentified Southern California man was struck and killed on Thursday in a bicycle accident involving a Ford Focus. The bicycle accident occurred on a sharp curve on Highway 1 near Bodega Bay, California.

The unidentified man was struck by the car of David Tryon, 64, of Berkeley, CA, who told police that the cyclist was riding north in the southbound lane and that the bike veered across the road in front of his car.

Tryon had to be cut free from the wreckage, but suffered only minor bodily injuries resulting from the car accident. He was taken to the Palm Drive Hospital for emergency room treatment after his car came to rest in a ditch.

A passer-by attempted CPR on the unidentified cyclist, but it is believed that he died upon impact, or soon thereafter, according to emergency personnel on the scene.

Bodega Bay Fire Chief Sean Grinnell says that the cause of the bicycle accident is unclear, but that strong winds may have played a role. He also indicated that the biker suffered multiple traumatic personal injuries, including major head trauma, and that he was visiting the area with a cycling group at the time of the fatal crash.

Picture More Clear on Westwood, MA East Street Bridge MBTA Bus Accident.

The low-clearing East Street MBTA commuter rail bridge in Westwood, MA tore off the roof of an MBTA bus this past Saturday afternoon.

According to Westwood Fire Department Captain Richard Cerrullo, the MBTA bus driver was lost and had strayed from his regular route of making shuttle stops between the Readville and Dedham commuter rail stations when the bus accident happened. Officials say that the bus was unoccupied at the time of the bus crash.

Cerrullo indicated that the evacuation measures taken at a nearby Roche Bros. store, the Westwood Little League Fields, and several nearby houses were only precautionary and done in response to the leaking of the compressed natural gas that was used to fuel the bus. Haz-Mat teams were not brought to the scene of the bus accident.

The East Street Bridge underpass, clearly marked with “Low Clearance” signs, has been the site of many accidents over the years involving trucks, but this was the first accident involving an MBTA bus.

MBTA Spokeswoman Lydia Rivera said that the MBTA and transit police would be investigating the bus accident for further details.
