Town Councilor From Maine Pleads Guilty to Drunk Driving After Motor Vehicle Crash.

Suzanne Phillips, a 36 year-old town councilor from Gorham, Maine, pleaded guilty to drunk driving in exchange for having her charges of leaving the scene of an accident dropped.

The charges stemmed from a May 4, 2012 incident in which Phillips hit two parked cars at around 1 AM and then drove off.  Police were directed by a witness to Phillips’s location, and found that her blood alcohol content was .11, and thus above the legal limit of .08.

Phillips claims she struck the vehicles after swerving to avoid a drunk pedestrian, and only left the scene to get her insurance card and other materials necessary to make a report of the incident.

No one was hurt in the motor vehicle collision.

Phillips has agreed to pay a $600 fine and have her driver’s license suspended for 90 days. She remains on the Gorham Town Council and has indicated that she will make a public statement regarding the charges at the next Town Council meeting.

Children With Cerebral Palsy Given Help In Bangladesh.

Experts believe that at least 1-2% of children born in Bangladesh are born with Cerebral Palsy, an ailment which is linked to the baby being deprived of oxygen during birth. Researchers have noted that 78% of the births in Bangladesh are at home, where people do not have easy access to medical professionals in the case of a complication.

The Center for the Rehabilitation of the Paralyzed in Bangladesh is teaching parents of children with Cerebral Palsy certain management techniques that can help their children. The courses last for 2 weeks, and the Center admits 80 mothers and their children per month.

Unfortunately, Cerebral Palsy is impossible to cure or even treat, but people can manage the disorder, especially if it is diagnosed early. Many children, however, go undiagnosed until they are older because mothers are stigmatized for having disabled children and hide their children’s disabilities instead of bringing them to the hospital. The Center has begun to reach out into communities to help these children.

Mitt Romney’s Brother-In-Law Sued For Medical Malpractice.

James A. Davies has undoubtedly turned his focus away from the presidential campaign of his brother-in-law, Mitt Romney, in order to focus on more personal matters. Davies is the medical director of the Davies Eye Center and is now facing a lawsuit for alleged medical malpractice.

According to the allegations of the medical malpractice complaint, Suzon Dellinger went to the Davies Eye Center complaining of several eye related issues, including itchiness, irritation, and a filmy discharge. The physicians did not treat her eye then, however, and instead directed her to come back in ten days.

According to Dellinger, this failure to treat her eye caused her to develop glaucoma. She has already had surgery on that eye. The eye has lost most of its vision already, and is expected to permanently lose all of its vision in the future.

Davies and the other defendants have denied any wrongdoing and instead allege that Dellinger’s own conduct caused her vision loss.

Dellinger trusted Davies and the Davies Eye Center with her vision. Although most interactions with medical professionals, such as optometrists, result in a healthier patient, some medical professionals make serious medical mistakes that can cause permanent personal injuries like vision loss.
