Food Poisoning at Arizona Restaurant Becomes Largest E. Coli Outbreak In 2013.

The current outbreak of E. coli, stemming from an Arizona Federico’s, is now the largest E. coli outbreak of 2013.

The outbreak began on August 2, 2013 when the Maricopa County Departments of Public Health and Environmental Services, and the Arizona Department of Health Services wrote a joint press release alerting families in the area to 15 cases of bloody diarrhea, the main symptom of a toxic E. coli infection. In the press release, officials stated that the epicenter of the outbreak appeared to be linked to, or centered on, Federico’s Mexican Restaurant located at 13132 W. Camelback Road in the West Valley,  just west of Phoenix.

According to E. coli information kept by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been as many as 68 confirmed cases of E. coli linked to the Phoenix-area Federico’s. These confirmed cases make this current outbreak of E. coli the largest since 2011.

Officials have also confirmed that the recent outbreak was caused by E. coli O157:H7, the most common type of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli tracked by the CDC. Local news reports have stated that 23 of the infected patients have been hospitalized with life-threatening E. coli HUS syndrome and other complications.

Although Federico’s was closed immediately following the outbreak, the restaurant has since reopened. This occurred even as private legal teams and health officials continue to try to determine, with certainty, what food or drink at the restaurant caused the initial outbreak, and precisely how the contamination occurred.

Litigation relating to the Federico’s outbreak has already begun with three separate victims having filed lawsuits in the Arizona court system. Many more similar lawsuits are on the way, as individuals and families recover their health and determine the costs they face because they were served contaminated food.

Alleged Boston, MA Killer Attacks Three Women and Pleads Not Guilty.

Edwin Alemany was arraigned in South Boston District Court on August 14, 2013 for multiple criminally charges brought as a result of Alemany’s alleged attack on multiple women in late July of this year.

Alemany is charged with attempted murder, assault and assault with a deadly weapon.  The attacks occurred on July 23rd and 24th, 2013. Two women survived after suffering varying degrees of personal injuries, but Amy Lord was killed between the attacks on the survivors.  Her body was found on July 23rd.  Alemany’s arraignment for the murder charge will take place in West Roxbury District Court.

Allegedly, Alemany told his first victim that he was not going to rob her, just kill her.  After he realized she was not the woman he was looking for, the prosecuting attorney says he apologized to the woman.  During the July 23rd attack on the first woman, he allegedly punched the woman in the face and dragged her into a parking lot by her legs.  The third attack involved him stabbing the woman in the face, neck and stomach.

Alemany has a long police record.  His attorney, Jeffrey Denner, said Alemany had a history of mental illness and of taking anti-psychotic medicine.  When he was evaluated at Bridgewater State Hospital over the last few weeks, Judge Thomas Horgan deemed him fit to stand trial.  Denner told news reporters that it was a very sad situation for so many reasons, something the families know too well.

Jehovah’s Witnesses Mauled By Pit Bull In Oklahoma.

43 year-old Beverly Wright and 78 year-old Irene Parker believe angels had a hand in their survival of a vicious pit bull attack that occurred this past March in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The two women were going door-to-door on North Delaware Avenue, educating residents about Jehovah and inviting them to an upcoming Jehovah’s Witnesses convention. Parker was approaching a home in the 200 block of North Lewis Place, when an 80-pound pit bull came barreling through the front door of the house and lunged at her head. Wright was two houses down the street when she heard Parker’s screams and ran to help her ministry companion and longtime friend.

Five-foot tall Wright wrestled the animal off Parker and put it in a headlock. The pit bull wriggled free from her grasp and again went for Parker. Wright pulled the canine off her friend a second time when the large animal turned on her instead. The dog tore at her arms, sunk its teeth into her leg, and dragged her across the yard.

Wright was resilient and grabbed a baseball bat from the dog’s owner who was standing nearby, screaming. Wright swung the bat twice at the dog before she lost her grip. Unfazed, the pit bull kept ripping into her leg. Finally, the animal attack ended when a local man named Mike Harrell grabbed a gun from his truck and shot the animal. Harrell, reportedly a quiet, polite man, had heard screams from two blocks away and acted quickly to save the women.

Both women were rushed to St. John Medical Center’s emergency room with life-threatening injuries and received hundreds of stitches. Both women also denied potentially life saving blood transfusions based on their religious beliefs.

Parker suffered several broken bones and her face is permanently disfigured. She claims she remembers little from the dog attack, but does remember a lot of blood and the sound of her right ear being torn off. She was released from the hospital in 18 days and has undergone five surgeries so far, and still requires more. Her most recent surgery rebuilt part of her eyelid that was torn off in the dog attack, rendering her incapable of closing one eye. Parker’s recovery has been difficult, as she says she went off her pain medication a week ago and is still in constant pain, making it hard to even sleep.

Wright, on the other hand, has made a remarkable recovery. She was told by St. John physicians that she might lose her leg, but she started going door-to-door again just six weeks after the attack. Wright goes door-to-door weekly, but says she usually gets tired after two to three hours, even with sporadic breaks. She is getting what she hopes to be the last of her five skin grafts next month.

Friends, relatives, neighbors, and other Jehovah’s Witnesses have supported the women via accounts that have been set up in the their names at the Bank of Oklahoma to help with medical expenses that are not covered by insurance.
