Cleveland Kidnapper And Rapist Commits Suicide In Prison.

Ariel Castro, a 53 year-old former bus driver and convicted rapist, kidnapper and abuser, has apparently hanged himself in his prison cell at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio late on the night of Tuesday, September 3rd, 2013. Castro’s death is yet another twist in the dramatic Cleveland, Ohio kidnapping case that has captivated the attention of the nation.

On August 1st, 2013, Castro pleaded guilty to and was convicted on 937 counts of rape and kidnapping for his actions over an 11-year period. During that time, Castro captured and held hostage three women, Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight. Castro repeatedly tortured, starved and raped the three women in a dungeon that he had built inside his Cleveland, Ohio home. During Castro’s sentencing trial, the victims spoke in open court about the details of the horror that they had experienced at Castro’s hands. One of the victims, Amanda Berry, had been impregnated by Castro and gave birth to a 6 year-old girl. For his crimes, Castro was served to life in prison, plus 1,000 years.

Castro was transferred from a county jail where he was being held pending the outcome of the case to the Correctional Center in Orient. While Castro was on suicide watch at the county jail, he was not so closely monitored at the Correctional Center. Castro was kept separate from the general population, a move that cost the state an extra $25,000 per year. Castro was also checked on by a guard once every 30 minutes. Obviously, this was not enough to keep Castro from committing suicide.

Castro’s defense lawyers have questioned the circumstances of Castro’s death and his detention at the Correctional Center. One of the defense lawyers remarked “I understand that the public in general is probably going to say, ‘Well, good riddance.’ But this is a human being.”

Dangerousness Hearing Set In Shocking Rape Case in Western Massachusetts.

Central Berkshire District Court Judge Phillip Beattie has granted the request of the prosecution to hold a dangerousness hearing on the possible release of one of the juvenile defendants in a rape case that has shocked the residents of Massachusetts.

According to the prosecution, 17 year-old Galileo Mondol actively participated in the attack on a freshman that took place during a preseason camp for the student athletes of Somerville High School students. The camp is organized every year by the high school officials and is held at Camp Lenox in Otis, Massachusetts. According to the victims, Mondol was with two other student athletes, who entered the tent of the victims and assaulted them with a broomstick. One 14 year-old male victim was sodomized with a broomstick and was later found crying and bleeding in a bathroom.

The prosecution’s case is contrasted with the defense case, which relies on the victim’s statements with regard to Mondol’s role in the sexual assault. The victim stated that Mondol did not participate in the attack, but that he just stood by and did not help. The other two assailants have given corroborating statements with regard to Mondol’s role in the assault. Another victim has stated, however, that Mondol told him to “shut up” and not tell anyone about the sexual assault.

Mondol has been charged with and pleaded not guilty to aggravated rape of a child, assault with intent to rape a child, assault and battery, and witness intimidation. Mondol’s dangerousness hearing, which will be held on September 6, will determine whether Mondol will be allowed to leave jail pending trial and the appropriate amount of bail.

Nurse Indicted for Negligent Care of Three Year-Old Tennessee Girl.

Demequa Bonds, a 34 year-old nurse from Cordova, Tennessee, was indicted on August 6, 2013 by a grand jury on one count of reckless homicide for the alleged negligent care of a 3 year-old who required 24-hour care.

Kayla had been born with a serious medical condition, Moebius Syndrome, and relied on a ventilator for breathing. Bonds, a licensed nurse employed by Where The Heart Is, Inc., was hired to be her in-home nurse over three years ago. Where The Heart Is, Inc., a state-certified home health care agency, specializes in providing care to pediatric and ventilator dependent patients in various counties throughout Tennessee.

The initial investigation into the incident began on February 2013 when the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) began investigating Bonds after an unidentified, female employee at West Tennessee Healthcare tipped them off to Bond’s alleged negligent behavior. The employee reported to TBI that she believed Bonds had been “negligent and responsible for Kayla Andrew’s death.”

Although Bonds was booked into the Shelby County Jail on August 6, indicted and subsequently released on a $10,000 bond, TBI has yet to release details of what the “negligent incident” was that reportedly caused the girl’s wrongful death. Nevertheless, no other arrests are expected in the case.
