Violence Derails Key Elections in North Mitrovica, Kosovo.

This past weekend, 50,000 Serbs living in northern Kosovo derailed a plan structured by the European Union, Serbia and Kosovo to integrate northern Kosovo with the rest of the country and to give Serbia its sought-after membership in the European Union.

During the late 1990s, Albanian insurgents in the majority-Albanian autonomous Serbian region of Kosovo began to wage war against the Serbian government, for what Albanians saw as violent oppression of the minority. Serbian government retaliated against the insurgents with brutal crackdowns. NATO and the Western nations interfered with an 11-week bombing campaign of Serbian military targets. In the end, Serbia lost de facto control of Kosovo, and in 2008, Kosovo declared its independence from Belgrade (capital of Serbia).

Five years later, the Serbian government had finally agreed to a European Union-brokered treaty, in which Serbia would abandon any sovereignty claims to Kosovo in exchange for membership in the European Union. As part of the deal, the Serbian government has encouraged the 50,000 Serbs living in northern Kosovo, mostly in the northern Mitrovica, to participate in local council elections held this past weekend.

Hardliners in Mitrovica, however, had other ideas, as masked individuals attacked polling stations and openly intimidated Kosovar Serbs from participating in the elections. Although there have been no reports of any deaths, dozens of individuals have been injured in attacks staged by Serbian nationalists. Voter turnout was lower than 10% in Mitrovica, and approximately 20% in the rest of northern Kosovo.

This violent result puts the deal so painfully reached by the European Union and Serbia under serious question.

30 Complaints Filed Against Sriracha Hot Sauce Producer.

Those with a penchant for spicy cuisine may be familiar with Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce, a throat-burning hot sauce often used in anything from complex Asian dishes to simple scrambled eggs. Fans of the sauce are stocking up this week after production of the condiment was suspended when 30 people filed complaints against Sriracha producer Huy Fong Foods.

The 655,000 square foot factory filled with the sauce is allegedly causing personal injury to both workers and neighbors of the factory. The injuries are thought to stem from the sauce’s ingredients, which are causing irritation particularly to workers’ eyes and throats, as well as causing severe headaches. The “unbearable odor” that fills the factory also wafts to residences nearby. One family claimed they had to move an outdoor birthday party inside after the stench caused many guests to experience extreme discomfort.

On the basis of the odor alone, Irwindale, California, where the factory is located, filed a suit in Los Angeles County Superior Court against Huy Fong Foods. In the suit, they stated that “the odor was a pubic nuisance.” They have asked the judge to halt production of the sauce “until the smell is reduced.”

In the meantime, workers at the factory are looking for compensation or relief for the intense discomfort that working with the product has caused them. Anyone familiar with the sauce knows that one squirt alone can cause eyes to water and the nose and throat to burn, so workers forced to be around the product for hours are stating that something must be done to prevent further injury to the factory employees.

Massachusetts Man Charged with OUI after Car Accident in MBTA Silver Line Tunnel.

A Massachusetts man has been charged with operating a vehicle under the influence after he crashed his car into a barrier in an MBTA Silver Line bus tunnel at around 1 a.m. this past Friday, October 25, 2013.

James M. Tilton, 57, was taken into police custody after police responded to the Massachusetts motor vehicle accident, in which Tilton crashed his vehicle into an automatic security barrier at the entrance to the subway tunnel.

The auto crash occurred as Tilton was driving home from TD Bank Arena after watching a Boston Bruins hockey game that took place on Thursday night.  Tilton claimed that he had only three drinks during the game, and that the car accident occurred when his friend told him to turn into the tunnel to get home.  However, the entrance to the Silver Line tunnel is clearly marked with signs warning motorists to keep out.

In addition, Tilton failed a field sobriety test, and later registered a .15 Blood-Alcohol Content on a breathalyzer test, which is nearly double the legal limit in Massachusetts.  Tilton was arraigned on drunk driving charges in Boston Municipal Court on Friday, October 25, and was later released on personal recognizance.
