Ceiling Collapses In Chicago, Illinois Music Hall Injuring Three People.

According to the Chicago, Illinois police department, three concert goers were injured this past Saturday, February 8, 2014 due to a ceiling collapse in Chicago’s Concord Music Hall.

The incident took place during a music show by DJ Datsik. The booming bass from the loud speakers set up in the music hall began to shake ceiling panels loose at approximately 1:20 a.m. on Saturday. Dust and plaster from the ceiling began to rain on the audience. A short time later, two large panels fell from the ceiling on the heads of the revelers.

According to the emergency responders, three men were rushed to the emergency rooms of nearby hospitals with non-life threatening personal injuries. The music hall has closed, pending a structural evaluation, repairs, and a building re-inspection. According to the structural engineer hired by the owner of the music hall, the loud music likely contributed to the ceiling collapse. IT remains unclear whether the music hall had complied with Chicago’s housing regulations at the time of the accident.

In the meantime, DJ Datsik has promised to come back “bigger and badder,” but hopefully not bringing down the house in such a literal way.

Mass Pike Traffic Collision Severely Injures Man from Medford.

A serious car accident occurred on January 23, 2014 on the Massachusetts Turnpike near Sturbridge, injuring a man from Medford, MA.

According to local authorities, the driver of the vehicle, Donald Ruscoe, lost control of the car and it veered off the road up onto a steep, wooded embankment.  Two passersby reported the serious accident shortly after 4:00 AM.  When emergency responders arrived, the vehicle was so wrecked that firefighters could not rescue the driver by normal means and had to resort to the special extraction tool known as the “jaws of life,” as well as assistance from Department of Transportation maintenance employees with chainsaws.  Ruscoe, age 45, was trapped within the vehicle and required immediate medical attention.

Sturbridge Fire Department Lieutenant Matthew Roderick and Paramedic Eric Riendeau were among the first responders to the scene.  Upon seeing the accident, they realized how severe Ruscoe’s injuries were and called for a helicopter from the University of Massachusetts Medical Center to transport Ruscoe to the emergency room for immediate treatment.  His injuries were described as nonfatal, but incapacitating.

Authorities are unsure what caused Ruscoe to lose control of the vehicle, and are continuing to investigate the accident.

Oscar-Winning Actor Dies In Apparent Drug Overdose In New York City.

Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman has passed away in New York City in what the New York Police Department (NYPD) is calling an apparent drug overdose.

Police sources within the NYPD confirmed on Sunday, February 2, 2014 that actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his New York City apartment. The police were tipped off about Hoffman’s possible death by a friend of the actor who called the 911 emergency line. The police and paramedics arrived at the apartment within minutes of the call, but could not revive the 46 year-old actor. Hoffman had a needle in his vein and a bag of heroin was reportedly found next to the body.

Hoffman won an Oscar in 2006 for his role in the biographical film “Capote” about the life of writer Truman Capote. Hoffman had also been nominated for an Oscar three times for his supporting roles in “Charlie Wilson’s War,” “Doubt” and “The Master.” Hoffman was prominent in the world of independent films, starring and winning awards in over a dozen independent films.

Hoffman’s death from an apparent drug overdose is not entirely unforeseen. Hoffman had spoken on several occasions about his drug addictions, including in a 2006 interview when he said that he used “anything I could get my hands on. I liked it all.”
