Professional Hockey Player Arrested On DUI And Drug Possession Charges.

Tampa Bay Lightning’s playoff preparations received a good dose of distraction this past Saturday when veteran forward Ryan Malone was arrested by the Tampa Bay, Florida Police for driving drunk and possessing 1.3 grams of cocaine.

In the early morning hours of Saturday, April 12, 2014, Tampa Bay police officer Paul Lusczynski witnessed Ryan Malone make a left turn from the center lane and then strike a curb in his sport utility vehicle. The police officer pulled Malone over and asked him to exit the motor vehicle. The officer stated that he smelled alcohol on the breath of the 34 year-old veteran NHL forward. Malone refused field sobriety test and was taken to a police station. At the station, Malone submitted to Breathalyzer tests which registered a blood alcohol content of .112 and .116. This BAC is higher than the legal driving limit of .08 in Florida. The police officers also found 1.3 grams of cocaine in Malone’s pocket.

Tampa Bay Police charged Malone with driving under the influence of alcohol and possession of a controlled substance. Malone was released from jail on a bond of $2500.

Malone was vigorously defended over the drunk driving incident by his coach at Tampa Bay Lightning. The forward is now facing the NHL mandatory drug evaluation and may be suspended as a result.

New York Man Dies While Allegedly Attempting To ‘Surf’ On Subway Train.

New York City authorities have reported that a man was killed on Wednesday, April 2, 2014, after he climbed on top of an NYC subway train and attempted to “surf.”

Isabel Rios, 45, of the Bronx, allegedly walked into the space between cars and climbed on top of the train on Wednesday night as the train was on an elevated section of the track.  Rios then allegedly attempted to “surf” on top of the train, but struck his head on an unidentified object.  Emergency responders found Rios unconscious and unresponsive on top of the train.  Rios was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rios worked as an architect in NYC, and he had been involved in the reconstruction of parts of Staten Island that were damaged by Superstorm Sandy in 2012.  Rios was engaged to be married, and his fiancée’s family described him as a “troubled artist” who was “very gifted and talented.”

Kevin Ortiz, a spokesperson for the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority, released a comment stating that “subway surfing is simply one of the dumbest things you can do.  Don’t do it.”

Hundreds Of People Filing Skechers Shape-Up Personal Injury Lawsuits.

Hundreds of people have joined together to file a personal injury lawsuit against the popular sneakers manufacturer Skechers. The suit alleges that the company’s “Shape-Ups” shoe design caused foot injuries so severe that one woman even had to undergo expensive and invasive surgery to correct the physical damage caused by the alleged product defect.

The newest plaintiff to the lawsuit, a woman from Mississippi, claims she bought Shape-Ups in January of 2011, and then regularly wore the sneakers. Within in months of wearing them, she says, she began experiencing severe pain in her right foot. She was later diagnosed with hallux valgus, hammer toe, and claw toe deformity. According to the lawsuit, she underwent expensive and invasive surgery to correct the foot deformities in June of 2012. However, she says she still suffers from foot pain and use limitations as a result of her injuries.

The lawsuit goes on to allege that not only was the sneakers’ design dangerous, but that Skechers intentionally misled the public about the safety and health benefits associated with Shape-Ups. The suit claims Skechers failed to adequately test the product before marketing it to the public as a good alternative to going to the gym.

To date, Skechers has been ordered to pay more than $40 million to settle a majority of the injury lawsuits against it.
