Local Cedar Lake Police Sgt. Keith Wood said that it appeared Burks was wearing her headphones in her ears at the time of the train accident<\/a> and never saw the train coming.<\/p>\n

Officials indicate that the tragic train wreck took place at around 3:40 p.m. after Burks had just finished walking a friend home after school. Burks\u2019 friends said that she was headed back to school for soccer practice as she walked along the train tracks. Burks died<\/a> after she was struck by a 75-car freight train.<\/p>\n
