{"id":1134,"date":"2015-04-27T15:31:21","date_gmt":"2015-04-27T15:31:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/boston-personalinjury-lawyer.com\/blog\/?p=1134"},"modified":"2015-04-27T15:33:15","modified_gmt":"2015-04-27T15:33:15","slug":"south-carolina-police-officer-shoots-man-eight-times-in-the-back-and-kills-him","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/boston-personalinjury-lawyer.com\/blog\/south-carolina-police-officer-shoots-man-eight-times-in-the-back-and-kills-him\/","title":{"rendered":"South Carolina Police Officer Shoots Man Eight Times in the Back and Kills Him."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Edmund Pettis Bridge, constructed in 1939, carries U.S. Highway 80 over the Alabama River in Selma, Alabama.\u00a0 On March 7<sup>th<\/sup>, 1965, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and over 500 civil rights activists conducted a peaceful march across the bridge.\u00a0 Dr. King\u2019s message was simple, but effective: Peaceful advocacy for equal rights for all Americans.\u00a0 Unfortunately, many Americans at the time, including the police, were unwilling to listen.\u00a0 Dr. King and his followers were met by hordes of policemen, who beat the marchers with clubs. 17 people were hospitalized on that \u201cBloody Sunday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/obmhzMb0dz4\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Years later, police brutality has moved to the forefront of our country\u2019s most heated debates.\u00a0 Public outrage has boiled over into violent conflicts.\u00a0<strong> Angry protests have sprung up in major U.S. cities, yet the number of police shootings seems to be never-ending.<\/strong>\u00a0 Cell-phones, which are owned by nearly every American, are the tools by which these horrific incidents are surfacing.\u00a0 They have documented the grisly details, the circumstances in which people are beaten or killed by police.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most recent police brutality tragedies to occur took place in North Charleston, South Carolina.\u00a0 <strong>On April 5, 2015, Patrolman Michael Slager pulled over 50-year-old Walter Scott after his taillight was out.\u00a0<\/strong> Somehow, Scott managed to flee from the scene after Slager began walking over to his car.\u00a0 Slager chased him down behind a pawn shop in North Charleston.<\/p>\n<p>A cell phone video from an onlooker captured a sickening sequence of events.\u00a0 The video shows Scott in a brief scuffle with Officer Slager, then running away from him.\u00a0 Officer Slager then drew his sidearm pistol and fired it eight times at Scott\u2019s back.\u00a0 After being riddled with bullets, Scott crumpled to the ground and lay there motionless.\u00a0 He died before EMTs could arrive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Police initially alleged that Slager had been protecting himself because Scott had taken his tazer away from him.\u00a0<\/strong> In the video, however, that claim is clearly refuted;
