Predicting Who Won’t Take Their Pills.

Express Scripts, a St. Louis based pharmaceutical company, is launching a computer screening program to help determine which patients are more likely to fail to comply with their doctors’ orders to take their medications.  The computer program, ScreenRx, sorts through more than 400 variables to determine if a patient is at risk for a failure to comply with his or her doctor’s instructions.

Express Scripts says they are launching this initiative because non-compliance costs the United States healthcare system an estimated $317 billion in additional medical expenses annually.  If a patient stops taking cholesterol medication, for example, additional expenses may result from that patient’s subsequent heart attack.  Express Scripts also plans to provide information to patients who cite the cost of medication as the reason for their non-compliance.
