Plunging budgets in the Los Angeles County court system have forced a series of upcoming layoffs, pay cuts, work reductions and transfers. More than 400 employees in over 50 courtrooms around the county will be affected by the court system cutbacks.
The coming layoffs are a “terrible loss” to the court system and the employees themselves, says Presiding Judge Lee Smalley Edmon. Judges and other court officials are expected to hand out layoff notices and announce the specifics of these cutbacks on Friday.
The union representing state and municipal employees is calling Friday’s action a “freeze on justice in Los Angeles.” The union also warned about the presumed consequences, including a backlog of cases on judicial dockets and significant delays in civil cases.
